Overstitch Gastric Bypass Revision

How Can The Endoscopic Overstitch Outlet Reduction procedure Benefit You?

What is the Overstitch Outlet Reduction Procedure?

Dr Cheng performs the Endoscopic Outlet Reduction Procedure as a revision to gastric bypass surgery

In gastric bypass surgery, a small stomach pouch is created and connected directly to a portion of the small intestine, bypassing the larger part of the stomach and the upper part of the small intestine. This aims to limit food intake and reduce calorie absorption, helping patients lose weight. The gastric outlet (opening between the stomach pouch and the intestine) however, may gradually enlarge with time, leading to less food restriction and potentially causing weight regain.

This procedure can help refine the results of gastric bypass surgery by adjusting the size of the outlet between the stomach pouch and the small intestine, thereby addressing issues related to food passage and enhancing weight loss result. It is one of many tools we have in combating weight regain after bypass surgery.

How Is The Procedure Done?

The procedure is performed under a general anaesthetic. The OverStitch system is inserted by Dr Cheng through an endoscope. Sclerotherapy is often used in conjunction with the Overstitch device to create scarring around the opening between the stomach pouch and gut before stitches are placed to reduce the size of the outlet.

The entire procedure may take 30min to an hour. Most patients are able to go home on the same day on a liquid diet. Talk to Dr Cheng today about the benefits of this procedure.

What are its ADVANTAGES?

The Overstitch Outlet Reduction Procedure is performed using a gastroscope and does not involve any surgical incisions

This means that you will most likely go home on the same day of the procedure without having to stay in hospital

There is no time frame where patients can have this procedure done. If you have encountered weight regain after bypass surgery, this may be an option for you to regain some of the restriction you previously had.

The Overstitch Gastric Outlet Reduction Procedure is generally considered safe. Dr Cheng will discuss the potential side effects and risks during your consultation.

Is the Procedure Effective?

The Overstitch device has shown effectiveness in various applications, particularly for refining and correcting issues after bypass surgery.

There is a growing number of studies that has shown patients can achieve 8-12% of total body weight loss after The Overstitch gastric outlet reduction procedure. Overall, results can still be quite variable depending on diet and lifestyle modifications following the procedure [1,2].

Am I a Candidate?

Patients who have undergone gastric bypass surgery and are experiencing weight regain from an enlarged gastrojejunostomy stoma (outlet) might be candidates for this procedure.

This procedure may also help with bypass patients experiencing rapid food transit leading to significant dumping or nutritional issues.

Make sure to discuss your goals and expectations with Dr Cheng. He could help determine if an Overstitch procedure aligns with your long-term weight management and health objectives.
