Dr Georgia Rigas is a Sydney-based GP specialist with nearly 20 years’ experience in the management of obesity and cardiometabolic health, with a strong focus on improving long-term metabolic outcomes through evidence-based, patient-centred care. She is the Medical Lead of the Obesity, Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery Unit at St George Private Hospital—home to Australia’s first internationally recognised Bariatric Centre of Excellence—and an Adjunct Associate Lecturer at St George & Sutherland Clinical School, UNSW Medicine. She is also the Founder and inaugural Chair of the RACGP Obesity Management Network.
An internationally recognised leader in obesity management and a dedicated advocate, Dr Rigas has advised multiple Australian government departments on obesity and its complications. She has played a pivotal role in shaping national policy and clinical practice, leading the development of key resources including the Metabolic Health chapter in the RACGP Red Book (10th edition), the RACGP Obesity Prevention and Treatment position statements (2019, 2025), the Australian Obesity Management Algorithm (2022), and the Australian Public Bariatric Surgery Framework (2020).
Through her clinical, academic, and advocacy work, Dr Rigas is committed to advancing obesity care and improving health outcomes at both a national and international level. A respected voice in the field, she has presented at Parliament House and serves on multiple scientific and advisory committees across Australia and globally.
